Putting Yourself Out There

After my recent email about why hiding doesn’t help, I started thinking about how much I’ve put myself and my ideas out there this year, even though my instinct is often to hide.
I’ve put myself out there online, through blog posts and emails and interviews and Instagram posts and groups chats and a survey and launches of things like the #ContentFreedomChallenge and email coaching (which is my new favorite thing, by the way—and I still have a couple of spots left for this year!).
I’ve also put myself out there in person, through mastermind groups and boss vacations and weekend retreats and meetups.
It’s not always easy for me. Sometimes I would rather hide (and from the responses to last week’s email, so would you). But by continuing to put myself out there, I’ve grown an immense amount this year—which is one of the key ways I measure success.
I’ve deepened my understanding of who I am, what I know, who I’m for, and how I can help—and as I’ve shared pieces of that journey, I’ve come to understand you in a much more meaningful way as you open up and share with me in return.
I’ve also learned a ton about my process, about how I work best, about my tendencies (good and bad), and about how I can best help you create meaningful connection with the people who need to hear what you have to say. (They’re out there.)
So in light of all that learning, this post has two purposes.

The first purpose of this post is to encourage you to make your own list of how you've been putting yourself out there.

I think we often don't give ourselves enough credit. We default to, Oh, I'm not doing enough when that's not always true. So take five minutes to write down (or just think about) all the ways you put yourself out there. And celebrate those wins!

The second purpose of this post is to tell you that I’m retiring the #ContentFreedomChallenge. 

It was so right for some people, but not for others—and my aim is to make all of you feel like you can do this work, not to make it feel overwhelming. So I’ll be sharing the challenge materials by email one more time and then I’ll be making space for something similar but less overwhelming that I’m really excited to share with you. Thank you to everyone who participated in and shared feedback on these first two rounds—I learned so much from you!
The last round of the challenge is beginning November 23! Yes, that's today.

I sent this note out by email last week, but in the hustle and bustle of getting out the door to visit my family for Thanksgiving, I forgot to post a note here on the blog as well. So if you've been interested in joining in on the challenge but you never signed up, send me a message. (You have to reach out this way—don't just sign up for my email list. I want to make sure you get the challenge if you want it, and a message is the only way to do that!) Let me know by December 1, 2015, which is when I'll return from Thanksgiving break.

Now I know this last round of the challenge is going to begin right before American Thanksgiving; I debated about this, but ultimately decided to just go for it—I want everyone to have these materials as an option while they plan for 2016. Anyone who's not ready to do the work yet can save the emails until they are!

Hiding Doesn't Help (and Actually, It Can Hurt)

Sometimes I feel great about where I am, about what I’m sharing, about how I’m helping—but sometimes I don’t. And I’m guessing the same is true for you.

The frustrating thing is that almost anything can set off the don’t feelings, from a bad night of sleep to a post that didn’t get a great response. It can be hard to pin down the triggers, but oh so easy to give in: To get in bed, pull the covers over your head, and hide. To flop on the couch, watch Netflix, and hide. To start looking for a day job (or think about quitting your side business)…and hide.

But here’s why hiding doesn't help (and can actually be pretty hurtful).

Your ideas—shaped from your special combination of wisdom, experiences, strengths, knowledge, and more—have power.

The power to help someone feel less alone.

The power to change someone’s experience.

The power to help someone find freedom.

Whether you talk about something emotionally intense (like working through past issues with grace), everyday struggles (like finding a nontoxic mascara that doesn’t smudge), making a business run smoothly (like building a meaningful online presence), or something else entirely, one thing is true:


There’s someone out there who needs to hear what you have to say.

There’s someone who’s been struggling with the thing you’ve figured out, who’s been searching for the thing you’ve already found, who’s been needing the reassurance that they can do something they find hard (even if it feels simple to you).

And they can’t find you (and find what they need) if you’re hiding.

So it’s time to get your ideas out there. Someone is waiting to hear them.

Proof and Permission through the Content Freedom Intensive

This post has been such a long time in the making.
I started scribbling notes about what is now the Content Freedom Intensive years ago. But I didn't trust myself enough to just put the work out there. I would look around me and think, Hmm, everyone else seems so polished and my ideas are all over the place. I can't share this mess. Or I would worry, Surely someone else has already said this better than I ever could. What do I have to offer?

On the one hand, I struggled to see how all my ideas fit together, and on the other hand, I worried that in the end, those ideas weren't good enough.

I didn't trust my vision (or myself) enough to believe that if I figured something out and then put it out there, feedback and conversation would lead me to the next step.

I've done a lot of work to pull myself out of that place, and along the way, I've realized something very important:

I was truly looking for two things that I suspect you're also seeking.

First, we're looking for proof. Proof that so many of the ideas pinging around in our heads (and in our hearts, cheesy as that can sound) do mean something. That those things do contribute to a bigger whole, a bigger purpose.

And second, we're looking for permission. Permission to let go of the ideas and “should”s and plans that just don’t fit into that bigger whole, that aren’t serving us or the people we want to help. Permission to put our seeds of ideas out there in a way that makes sense to us right now and then gather feedback and refine as we move forward.

I finally found that proof and permission within myself, and I’m here to help you find your own proof and permission.

And that’s why I’m officially launching the One-on-One Content Freedom Intensive!

Now I know what you’re thinking—what about the self-paced version?
I had planned to launch it with the one-on-one version, but recently, I found out that the universe had other plans. I let myself wallow in yucky feelings for about an hour, and then I pulled myself together and gave myself a stern talk. (While on a walk, which is how I do these things best.)
By the time I got home, I had made peace with the delay. I am the kind of person who wants to do things the right way, and so I’m taking the time to get all my ducks in a row before I send it out into the world.

But in the interim, I’m launching something totally brand-new: email coaching!
